Plotting a New Series

•May 23, 2017 • Leave a Comment
So IT BEGINS

My new adventure in plotting a new series.
Truth is, I didn’t initially plan for this to be a series, but, it just grew.

HOW I DID IT IN THE PAST

Well in the past, I just went with the flow. I didn’t plan out the series, the covers, the promotions. However, by working with the Kindle World authors in RUNES UNIVERSE I learned to do a more thorough job of planning my SERIES.

WHAT NO PROMOTIONAL PLANNING COST ME

Cover changes and design changes galore. That was money wasted, but I learned my lesson. This time, I am going to do a better job of it. I have my characters picked out and made sure there are plenty of photos to work with for each for promotional materials and designs.

I lost many advertising opportunities because I didn’t have a model with many photos. I also lost many by not completely plotting out my series.

Branding challenges also hit hard when you don’t plan your series.

WHAT AM I DOING DIFFERENTLY

1) Outline the entire series
2) Select models for each cover early with many photos
3) Brand the style of the series covers early
4) Brand the world building and find photos for them to use for promo
5) Share more as I write

SHARE WHAT YOU CONSIDER A WELL PROMOTED AND PLANNED SERIES?

Phases Of Falling In Love With A Book

•May 1, 2017 • Leave a Comment

HOW IS YOUR LOVE OF A BOOK CAPTURED?

Reader Sending Me Love By showing off my book.
THE PHASES OF FALLING FOR A BOOK.
What is the first thing that captures your attention when you see or hear or are told about a book? Is it like dating? Don’t you have a preference for the presentation of the ‘first impression’?
THE COVER, THE GENRE, THE BLURB, THE FIRST PAGE, THE RECOMMENDATION?
In most cases it does depend on how and when the book is presented to you. However, I believe the first thing that captures me is….
THE GENRE (you thought I was going to say BOOK COVER right?) Well that’s a TIE for #1 COVER and GENRE because I and most readers have their preference for genre and they don’t veer to far off from what they are committed to liking.
After most readers have fallen for the THE GENRE and / or BOOK COVER the RECOMMENDATIONS come in to play and can OVER SHOOT the INFLUENCE of the BOOK COVER

DO YOU BELIEVE A GOOD RECOMMENDATION WILL OVER THROW a LACK of COVER LOVE?
I do, there are personal taste in color and theme that a reader has for their genre and will overlook a good book match because of that. However, if a friend or a review speaks highly of that book, they will likely bite and  move on to the NEXT ELEMENT of FALLING into BOOK LOVE.

THE BACK COVER BLURB
This is getting close to clenching the heart of the reader. If the back cover blurb PERSUADES without TELLING THE ENTIRE TALE and seduces the reader further, then the reader just might, move to the FINAL STAGES of falling in love.
UNWRAPPING the FIRST PAGE
Now we are getting closer to the goal. If that book grabs the reader in the first 5 sentences, then LOVE BLOSSOMS and the reader grabs the book.
HOW DO YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH A BOOK? Even before you delve inside?

Spreading Your Writing Bug

•April 20, 2017 • Leave a Comment

Where Does My Writing Show Up?

Earlier in my writing career, I had so much time and vigor with my authorship of different works. It was a struggle to stay within one genre. The first genre I wrote in was a labor of love.

However, as I matured as an author, my desire and push has led me into other endeavors besides Middle Grade Science Fiction.

WHY YOU SHOULD EXPAND YOUR WRITING HORIZONS?

It’s a way of

(1) Discovery of your authoring talents
(2) Trying something new
(3) Spreading your talents into other areas
(4) Marketing and building your Platform.

WHERE ARE THE BEST PLACES OUT SIDE OF NOVEL WRITING TO WRITE?

I write in many other places besides the genres found in novels. Here are some that served me well.

(1) Anthologies
(2) Articles on other blogs, papers, magazines
(3) Amazon Kindle Worlds
(4) Non-Fiction writing

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN WRITING OFF YOUR PATH

As an author, you are a business entity among yourself. Your time is money. So, when you are considering creating of an article, blog post, Wattpad story or anything > ask yourself:

(1) What do I expect to gain from this?
(2) Is the payoff worth the time and effort away from other projects?
(3) Is this a quantifiable endeavor?
(4) What will my marketing ‘reach’ be
(5) Will I be able to give a quality product in this subject area?

WHAT ARE SOME WRITING side adventures in which you BENEFITED?

PATH
TO OLD TALBOT
A
Young Adult Fantasy
Thirteen-year-old Charity can
escape her unpleasant reality by stepping through the parlor closet of her
mother’s new home, a mansion built in the 1800’s.

In her hometown of Talbot, New York, in the year 1880, she doesn’t have to
worry about her depressed father skipping his medications or her mother
flirting with her coworker. Instead, she gets to know the hatter’s son, who
shows her a lifestyle of manners and pride. Few have ever accepted Charity’s
old-fashioned ways…until now.

However, old Talbot can’t banish the present. Charity can stay in the mansion,
with access to the hatter’s son in the past, and the prospect of a steady
family unit with her mother and the new man in her mother’s life, or she can go
back to her father, who has been given the option to straighten out his life
and join them in their new home. Instead, his world unravels, and he spirals
into violence and self-harm.

Torn between two worlds, Charity knows that if she doesn’t help him, she may
lose him forever if he follows through on his threats of self-destruction.

PATH TO OLD TALBOT is on Amazon from CHBB.
